Back row: George Fenwick (far right). The Fenwick Brothers and Robert Morrish established the sawmill at the lower end of Maple Street on the northern side of the township in 1908. The mill, the first in Cooroy, traded as 'Canadian Sawmills'. It began operating in 1909. In ca 1912 Morrish sold his interest in the mill to the Fenwicks. The Fenwick family had moved to Cooroy from Astonville, New South Wales. There were four brothers; George Fenwick worked the planer at the sawmill; his brother Fred was the builder, Bill Fenwick worked in the mill office and for many years Walter Fenwick also worked at the mill. By 1925 the mill employed nine men on a full time basis. In 1929 the mill was sold to Blanford, Llewellyn, Smith and Carter who subsequently sold out to Straker and sons in 1941.Date1923Image NoM863578
