Alternative NameThe Community Art Urban Design ProjectDescriptionIn 1995 the Cooroy Butter Factory Inc. initiated The Community Art Urban Design Project. The Cooroy Streetscape and Urban Design Group was formed to coordinate the project. The project was completed under the Artistic directions of Suzanne Holman (Co-ordinator, artist and director) together with Richard Newport (Designer, artist and builder), Walbira Watts (Indigenous design and consultant), Judith Glover (Blacksmith), Robert White (Indigenous artist), Davina Kelly (Indigenous artist), Alison Henderson (Footpath design), John Mongard (Landscape architects), Nick Ash, Trevor Hay and Robyn Barnet. With participation by the Cooroy & District School Students, T.A.F.E. Communication Students, Residents of the district, Cooroy Community Groups, The Indigenous Community, Cooroy Butter Factory Urban Design Committee and Local Shopkeepers and Businesses.
The project was funded by the Australia Council, Arts Queensland and Noosa Shire Council.
Over 400 people participated in community workshops through the stages of facilitation, planning, design, creation and installation of six major artworks and 1500 pavement works in Maple Street, Cooroy.
Stage 1 was completed and opened on 8 March 1997 by Mayor Bob Abbot.
Stage 2 between Emerald and Garnet Streets was completed mid-1998.
