Sally Davies Oral History
DETAILS
Overview
Sally Davies shares her life story, from emigrating from England to Australia in 1962 to establishing a long term connection with the Noosa region. Arriving as an 11 year old immigrant, Davies later lived in New Zealand before settling permanently in Australia, where she met her husband Lloyd at age 14. After raising three children, the family moved to Carters Ridge in 1981, building their own home and becoming deeply involved in the local rural fire brigade. Davies served as Secretary Treasurer and later as a fire officer, while Lloyd held senior brigade roles. Together, they represented Queensland at a national memorial service, reflecting their commitment to community service.
Davies recounts memorable fire events, community challenges, and the strong rural networks that shaped life at Carters Ridge. The proposed Traveston Dam became a traumatic turning point, forcing the sale of their property and causing widespread distress among residents. Following Lloyd’s declining health, the couple moved to Pomona and later to a retirement village in Noosaville.
In retirement, Davies remains active in community life, helping run a coffee club, engaging in social activities, and supporting local causes. She reflects warmly on Noosa’s beauty but notes increased busyness and changing conditions, including the impacts of COVID 19.
