Local torch bearers included Phil Cave and Darrel Rose. The Olympic flame was flown 17000 kilometres from Athens to Australia in a special miners' safety lamp. The torch was then carried by around 2750 torch bearers from Cairns to Melbourne, with each torch bearer covering one mile. The relay took 15 days with the torch arriving in Melbourne in time for the opening ceremony at the MCG on November 22. In 2016, the torch bearers gathered in Gympie to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the torch relay. To read more: '56 Torchbearers Celebrate Diamond Anniversary.
