Alternative NameCooran Primary SchoolCooran Provisional SchoolCooran Public SchoolCooran State Primary SchoolAdditional Information
In 1906, the Department of Public Instruction approved the site for a new provisional school to be erected at Cooran. The new two acre school site was donated by Cooran pioneer, William Martin, and was part of his Portion 548. In 1907, tenders were called and awarded to W Bytheway for £136 10s. The sole teacher, Frances Negus, commenced classes before being officially notified to do so by the Department, no doubt because of the poor state of the old Bellbird Flat School.
The original Bellbird Flat State School was moved to this site from nearby Bellbird Flat, because of the dangers of the nearby creek, the muddy site and its distance from the main centre of the growing town of Cooran. Mr Charles E Ellison was the first head teacher at Cooran State School in 1909.
