Peregian Motorkana
ABOUT THIS ITEM
Alternative NameMotorkanaAdditional InformationPeregian Motorkana was an event on the annual, inter-club vintage car calendar, organised by the Nambour Antique Auto Club. It began in 1969 as one of the Sunshine Coast Spring Festival (then Festival of Waters) events and continued through the 1970s. In the early years, Peregian Motorkana consisted of three main competitive events over one weekend; the Concours d'Elegance, where vehicles were judged for aesthetics and condition; a 'treasure hunt' rally from Peregian to the House of Bottles in Tewantin and return via Noosa Heads; and a gymkhana on the Peregian Beach Show Grounds in the form of garaging and general driving tests and races in various vehicle categories.
Held in September, the event showcased the best of the Sunshine Coast in terms of weather and scenery whilst catering to both the die-hard vintage car enthusiasts as well as those keen to simply enjoy the spectacle, the festival atmosphere and the concurrent dinners and events. The 1970 event was described as the largest ever car rally held in Queensland to date. Developer T.M Burke Pty Ltd. was the event's main sponsor, providing the Peregian Caravan Park and all amenities free of charge for the weekend.
From 1971, the Tewantin-Noosa Lions Club took responsibility for catering and entertainment, raising money for the new ambulance station.
