HERITAGE NOOSA
St Patrick's Catholic Church
DETAILS
Description
The church was opened and blessed in 1922, by the Rev. Dr J. Heavey on behalf of Archbishop Duhig. It was established on a site donated by Pomona resident, Mr Vincent Bazzo, and cleared of trees by local men prior to the church’s construction. Timber for the church was donated by Mr Arthur Bull, with timber for the altar supplied by Mr Patrick Dwyer. The buildings was over 40 feet long and 28 feet wide and cost £900, including church furniture.
Architect Frank L. Cullen prepared drawings in the 1930s for an extension to the church commissioned by Archbishop Duhig. The extensions increased the building footprint and used materials and details, such as new windows, that matched the original building.
In the mid-1970s, the congregation decreased due to the decline in the population of Pomona, and the Parish Priest, Father Hegarty, moved to Tewantin, which was growing rapidly. St Patrick’s Catholic Church was closed at this time and parishioners travelled to the Cooroy Catholic Church to attend Mass. Father Basil Meaney replaced Father Hegarty as Parish Priest in 1983 and with curate Father Howell assisting, the Pomona Church was re-opened, with Mass being held on alternate Sundays with Cooroy.
The Noosa District Catholic Parish community celebrated the centenary of St Patrick’s Catholic Church with a Mass on March 26, 2022.
