Tewantin-Noosa RSL Memorial Park
DETAILS
Alternative NameTewantin-Noosa Memorial ParkDescription
The Tewantin Soldiers’ Memorial Reserve was officially proclaimed by the Queensland Government Gazette in 1920, on previously vacant Crown Land with the intention to honour local men who served in WW1. One chain and a half were set aside at the request of Noosa Shire Council for an esplanade along the river frontage. The Tewantin War Memorial, featuring an Australian Light Horseman, was unveiled in January 1922 and located under an existing mature fig tree within an area defined by a low timber post and top rail fence. In February 1921, a German WW1 mine was discovered by R McGoorty at Teewah Bay and later displayed in the Reserve. Another mine of German make was found by Mr G Massoud in 1944 and relocated to the park to serve as a memorial. In 1956, a memorial fountain was unveiled in memory of local MLA, Harry F.Walker, recognizing his contributions to the community and the establishment of the Reserve.
The park has been used by the Tewantin community for recreation since that time, with its sloping grassy banks providing a high viewing point for boating and other riverside activities. Changes to the Reserve over time include the removal of the timber fencing in the 1970s, the relocation of the War Memorial to Poinciana Avenue in 2000, and the addition of features such as the playground, public amenities, Bureau of Meteorology weather station, memorial arch, various park fixtures, furniture and plantings.
