Cooran Memorial School of Arts
DETAILS
DescriptionThe Cooran Memorial School of Arts was opened in August 1906 by Mr. W. Martin, owner of the Railway Hotel, with a grand social and dance. Initially, the hall served as a venue for various community events such as dances, concerts, theatrical productions, and boxing matches. It also functioned as the returning office for the Noosa Council elections in 1910 and hosted the first meeting of the newly elected Council.
In 1925, the committee of the Cooran Memorial School of Arts purchased the Federal Hall from Mrs JH Mcllwraith. Architect Mr S Prior was engaged to improve the hall with the addition of two shops in front as a means of generating income. These works were completed in 1926. The library was opened the same year with 1,000 volumes. In 1930, the Cooran branch of the QCWA donated funds to assist with further improvements, and in return, they were given free rental of a room for their activities. The hall was extended in 1947 with timber for the half the floor donated by Cooran sawmillers, Straker & Sons. The extension was funded by rental monies received from commercial premises
on the ground floor. In 1958, a supper room was added. Over time, the hall’s use and ownership evolved to meet the community’s needs, reflecting its ongoing importance to Cooran where it has remained in continuous use since 1906.Address 14, King Street, Cooran
