Tewantin Cemetery
DETAILS
Description
The Tewantin Cemetery was established in 1877 and is the oldest public cemetery in the Noosa Shire. It is located on the western outskirts of Tewantin on what was originally a 10 acre (4 ha.) lot, a substantial part of which remains bushland. Graves are located on a large cleared part of the cemetery reserve fronting Cooroy-Noosa Road. The first burial is believed to have been that of Mary Hill in 1876, prior to the gazettal of the cemetery reserve.
Prominent early settlers of the district who are buried in the Tewantin Cemetery include Henry Lennox, Robert Megarity, Eliza Ferguson, James and Jane Duke, Charles and Emma Tait, Daniel Martin and members of the Ely, Tedford, Ross, Clarey and Massoud families.
Originally run by a board of local trustees, the cemetery was taken over by the Noosa Shire Council in 1959. The Tewantin Cemetery is of historical significance for its close association with the early European settlement of the Noosa region and provides information about the diverse ethnicity and demography of the early European settlers in the region. The cemetery’s setting is typified by the strong sense of enclosure created by the stands of mature native trees forming a perimeter to three sides of the main cemetery area. It is a place with strong symbolic and spiritual value because of its continuity of use as a burial place for over a century.
