In 1920, the Massoud family opened a café on Gympie Terrace, known as ‘Maisie’s’. Seven years later, in 1927, they built a private jetty opposite the café. This jetty supported their passenger transport business and provided a place for passengers to embark and disembark from the vessel, Riverlight. Over time, the slipway became associated with nearby Massoud’s Jetty and Maisie’s Restaurant, reflecting the family’s expanding business ventures and changing use of their properties. It remains in use today and is a landmark along the Noosa River frontage in Noosaville.
Nowham (‘Ted’) and Etore (‘Edith’) Massoud arrived in Australia in 1900 from Lebanon. They moved to Gympie Terrace, Noosaville in 1908, following the birth of their daughter Maisie. The Massouds took up fishing to feed their family and to generate an income but soon established a crew and began mullet fishing with nets on a larger scale.
