Kybong State School (former)
DETAILS
Alternative NameCooroy-Pomona Lions Club denDescription
In June 1960, a public meeting held in Pomona decided to re-form a Scouting Group. Kybong State School (former) was bought and relocated from Kybong, south of Gympie, to the site in Mountain Street in 1961. Kybong Provisional School opened in 1905 and, as Kybong State School, closed in 1960. When the Pomona Scout Group disbanded, the buildings were left unoccupied for a number of years and had begun to fall into disrepair. The Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club approached Noosa Council with a request to lease the buildings as a club house. On obtaining a lease, the club obtained grant funding and donations of materials to undertake extensive restoration of both buildings over time. They continue to operate the building as a clubhouse and hall for hire and it is the focus of numerous events and activities from book sales to fun runs that support the Lions Club and the local community.
The school building was moved by Lionel Hempsall of Kin Kin, on one of his timber jinkers. The roof was taken off for the trip, as it was too high for the electricity lines and a police escort accompanied the building during the relocation. The Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel Smith, officially opened the building on 5 January 1963. The building has been modified by a partial enclosure of the front verandah, and the addition of another building, the former Ringtail Forestry Barracks, at the rear.Address 2, Mountain Street, Pomona
