Pomona Hotel
DETAILS
Alternative NameRailway HotelDescription
The first Pomona Hotel was built by 1906, opposite the railway station. It was a single storey building with nine bedrooms and a four-stalled stable and a large yard at the back. James G. Mitchell was named as Licensed Victualler in 1907. Burnett later took over the licence and remained as Licensed Victualler until September 1912. By April 1913 the license had been transferred to James Connolly.
In 1913, the Pomona Hotel was destroyed by fire along with other adjacent properties. The owner of the building, Mr C. Walters, was insured and this allowed him to commence the rebuilding of the hotel which was opened in August 1913. It survived another serious fire in Pomona in 1937 and it has remained in continuous use for a hotel, on the site since 1906 and, in the current building, since 1913.
At the time of its rebuilding the new Pomona Hotel was described as a two-storey, up-to-date building that compared favourably with the other hotels along the North Coast rail line. It contained thirty-five rooms with a frontage of 80 feet facing the railway station and a 35 foot wing facing the township.
Various owners/licensees over the years have been (since 1949) - Bonutto, R. M. McGee, S.D.Eberhardt, Bill Davies, Ted Troyahn, Gus Braidotti. In 1969, the Sherman family bought the hotel, and it was managed by Keith and Dawn Page, Bob & Pat Schofeld, followed by Max, Bruce and Beryl Marian, the Turner family, Keith and Kay Murphy, Alan and Ruth Hess and Peter and Maureen Hansen.Address1 ,Station Street,Pomona
