Pomona Ambulance Station
DETAILS
Description
The official opening of the Pomona Ambulance sub-branch of the Queensland Transport and Ambulance Brigade occurred in September 1917. This building (also known as the Shelter Shed), later relocated next door), was originally situated close to the Pomona Railway Station and the superintendent’s residence was originally located in Ambulance Street. By 1925, planning for a new ambulance headquarters was underway and three years later the headquarters opened. Planning for anew, larger facility began in 1947 and by 1949, newspaper reports announced that the block of land in Reserve Street, where the Ambulance Station is currently located, had been paid for. Instead of anew two-storey building as planned, the superintendent’s residence was relocated to the Reserve Street site, raised to accommodate vehicle parking bays beneath, and altered to include a treatment room on the lower level. The upper floor continued to serve as the residence for the officer in charge. The new Pomona Ambulance Centre was opened in March 1951 by Mr D.A Low, M.L.A.
The building has been modified and modernised over the years to accommodate modern ambulance vehicles and ambulance service operations. In 1991, the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB) that had operated in Pomona since 1992 became the Queensland Ambulance Service Pomona Local Ambulance Committee.
In the same year, the Ambulance service were able to purchase a Dodge Motor Ambulance to replace the horse and sulky and hand-litter previously used to transport patients. Community support for the Pomona Ambulance was essential and funds were raised through dances, sports events and other functions.
