Pomona Post Office
DETAILS
Description
A postal service was provided at the Pomona railway station for many years by Mrs Kelliher, the Station Mistress, before being moved to Mr Holzberger’s store in 1910. In 1913, the government secured land in Pomona for the building of a Post Office. However, a purpose built post office was not erected immediately. The 1913 post office and telephone exchange were located in Cunningham and Mill’s store and in 1914, these services were moved to the building formally used by the Commonwealth Bank, with Mr J. Barron engaged as Postmaster. A post office was then erected on the corner of Reserve Street and Memorial Avenue, however, this building was later sold.
The current post office was built at Memorial Avenue in 1936. The post office is a good representative example of the standard Type T22 design produced by the Queensland Works Department in the 1920s and 1930s. The building is still in use as the Pomona Post Office today.
Alterations have been made to the building over time. Mr T. Wheeler took over as Postmaster in 1982, and in 1983, his son, an architect, designed an extension to the back of the building and changed the space to provide living quarters for Mr Wheeler and his family. This consisted of a living room, bedroom, ensuite, kitchen, and a landing was added on to the back.
