Cooroy Tennis Club
DETAILS
Additional Information
A temporary tennis court was formed on the Cooroy school grounds in 1911 and officially opened for play in September that year (Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser 1911). During subsequent years, the club must have declined because in
1917, newspaper accounts indicate a move to ‘resuscitate’ the Cooroy Tennis Club, which resulted in a new club being formed (Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette 1917). A new Cooroy Tennis Club was formed in 1919. The new
club was to take over the assets and liabilities of the old club and two new courts were established on the sports ground (The Brisbane Courier 1919). Again, it appears that interest in tennis in the Cooroy district was reinvigorated with reports
of new tennis club formed in 1927 with Mr F. Marryatt elected captain and Mr W. Yates elected vice-captain (Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser 1927). By 1933, it was decided to form an association, made up of the Black Mountain, West Cooroy, Cheerio (Cooroy), Newlyn and Bagtown tennis clubs (The Brisbane Courier 1933).
In 1938, a public meeting to revive tennis was held in Cooroy and it was decided to establish a new club called the Cooroy Tennis Club (Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser 1938).
Further research is required to establish the timeline of tennis clubs in Cooroy in the lead up to the establishment of the 1938 club.
