Amy Dwyer Oral History
DETAILS
Overview
Amy was born in the late 1940s, the daughter of the multi-generational Cooroy Bonnell family. She attended primary and high school in Cooroy and trained as nurse in Nambour. Other than a few years prior to her marriage in 1971 when she nursed in other parts of Queensland, Amy has lived her whole life in Cooroy and raised her children there.
This is an interview filled with laughter as Amy reminisces about many events in her nursing, social, and family life. Through a series of mostly amusing anecdotes, Amy paints a picture of life as a young woman at a time when Australian society was in a state of rapid social change and as a nurse working in small rural communities. She recounts the adventures of being a young nurse away from home, describing both the restrictions in place and the relatively innocent hi jinx that occurred as well as some of the more interesting patients she cared for.
Amy discusses:
-her lifelong love of dancing
-her wedding and marriage to Neil and the challenges of marrying in the Catholic Church as a non-Catholic
-Nursing in country hospitals and various aspects of nursing she has been involved in
-Travel with her husband Neil
-The community project, in partnership with Noosa Council, to restore the Cooroy Hall
-Involvement with badminton and golf
