Apollonian Hotel
ABOUT THIS ITEM
Additional Information
The Apollonian Hotel and music hall was built in Gympie ca 1868 by Robert ‘Billy’ Barlow, a renowned monologue entertainer. The hotel passed through a number of owners before it closed in 1951. In 1988, The Apollonian hotel was relocated to its current site in Boreen Point and has continued to provide hotel services to the Noosa region since that time. Although its original setting has been lost, the hotel building itself remains as one of the last surviving timber music hall hotels built in the 1870s.
Built from local timbers of cedar and hoop pine, it still stands in its original built form, featuring wide verandahs under a broad pyramid style roof and retains much of its original layout and timber building materials and details. This building is indicative of the historically strong links between Gympie and Noosa and the tradition of relocating and reusing buildings within the region.
