Following a campaign to prevent sand mining activities in Cooloola in the 1960s, the Cooloola National Park was gazetted in 1975. In the early 1970s, Sir Thomas Hiley KBE, former Treasurer of Queensland and founder and President of the Bird and Wildfowl Association of Queensland, began a project ‘to promote the preservation and public observation of native bird species in natural environments’. The Cooloola National Park was eventually selected for the location of the project and a supporting visitor centre. The Queensland Works Department provided architectural design for this unique spotted gum and cypress timber building, accessible only by boat or walking track, set on stilts over Lake Cootharaba. Kinaba opened to the public in March 1979. It is of significance for its unique design and setting on the lake’s edge and demonstrates the value placed on the conservation of Noosa's natural enviroment and the early and ongoing efforts of individuals and the local community to preserve it.AddressTeewah Beach Road, Lake Cootharaba
