Cooroy State School, Elm Street, Cooroy, 3 August 1909

Elm Street, Cooroy, was formerly a timber reserve. In 1908, after the lease was terminated by the government, the first town auction of lots was held. On 21 March 1907 parents and residents met to decide on establishing a Provisional School. The Committee paid the Department of Public Works to enable a tender to be called to build the school. The school building measured 24 feet by 16 feet and had two verandahs and a tank with a capacity of 1000 gallons. It opened on 18 January 1909 with R T Bolton as headmaster and 18 pupils. The rapid growth of settlement in the locality was reflected by the increase enrolment of 64 students by the end of the year. An assistant teacher, Miss Adeline Sivyer, was appointed to help with the workload and a playshed was built, probably to allow classes to be taught under the school building.
