TitlePete the Noosa Pelican, Festival of the Waters, Noosaville, 1985 Additional InformationPete the Noosa Pelican, (Pelican Pete) was built ca 1977 in Noosa Council's workshop for Rotoract as a float for the Festival of the Water Parade. The Pelican was an appropriate choice for a float as it was then the emblem of Noosa Council. The Big Pelican participated in many parades but fell into disrepair a number of times and was subsequently repaired and relocated around Noosaville. During the 1990s the Pelican was acquired by the owners of Pelican Boat Hire and moved to the roadside of Gympie Terrace, where it became a prominent landmark. It also became the character Peter P. Pelican in Wendy Alice Waring's book 'I can see the colour and lights of Noosa'. In 2007 the Noosa Council agreed with a permanent location in the foreshore park in front of Pelican Boat Hire. A fibreglass surface was used to strengthen and reconstruct the original paper mache covering the metal frame and the restored Big Pelican, owned and maintained by Pelican Boat Hire, was officially opened on 13 October 2007.Date1985Image NoT0999060
