The inaugural Celebrity Pro Am Golf Event was held in December 1979 at the Tewantin Noosa Golf Club. The initial concept for such a tournament was devised by the Club President at the time. It was believed that professional golfers would enjoy a post-season Pro Am and to add to the tournament the Club would also invite celebrities, entertainers and sports people also to play. Jack Newton attended every year. The tournament is the longest running and most successful celebrity pro-am golf tournament in Australia.
After Jack survived his accident in July 1983, the next event held was in honour of Jack. After Jack formed the Jack Newton Golf Foundation the tournament was renamed The Jack Newton Celebrity classic (The Jack).
The event had a great ‘feel’ about it, especially to propagate a Celebrity type event where Jack took it upon himself to improve the standard of professionals, find new sponsors and introduce more celebrities….the first ones being Ronnie Corbett and Ricky May.
