HERITAGE NOOSA
Joan Sinclair
DETAILS
Additional InformationJoan was born in 1935 in Brisbane to parents Sam and Ina Williamson. Joan is the eldest of five children. Her father was in the army. She went to three schools in the northern suburbs of Brisbane and learnt shorthand and typing. At age 15 or 16 years, Joan’s first job was in the Mitchelton post office which was attached to a grocery story. Later, with her sister, she opened a drapery shop that “sold everything”.
Joan married Ron Sinclair and in 1961 they moved to Noosa, taking over and running the dry cleaners/laundry in Noosaville, next to Maisie’s Restaurant. The business serviced the local area and hinterland towns, the police, hotels, and motels.
Ron was trained as a cabinet maker/master builder and ran several other businesses in Noosa. He fished and sold his fish from his home, until this became unprofitable due to the measures put in place by the Fish Board. The Sinclairs then purchased the Noosa Queen from Duncan Lawrie and ran Coloured Sands Tours, taking visitors along the Noosa North Shore w. Their boat was the Noosa Queen boat which they bought off (Duncan) Lawrie’s Tours. Opening up North Shore to 4WDs and Ron’s brain injury meant the business had to fold. Ron suffered an aneurysm at relatively young age and was unable to work. This resulted in the sale of the boat. The couple spent several years living in Coolum Beach before Joan returned to Tewantin and the river.
In addition to running several businesses, Joan has been involved in school parents and citizens (P&C) scouts, and the Quota club.
