Rob Middenway Oral History
DETAILS
Overview
Rob Middenway reflects on his life as a commercial photographer, videographer and early digital innovator, and on his experiences during Noosa’s transformation from a laid back coastal village to a major tourism destination. Born in Melbourne in 1942, Middenway first worked in advertising photography before travelling through Europe. On returning to Australia, he began contract work for the Australian Tourist Commission, which eventually brought him and his wife June to the Sunshine Coast in the late 1970s.
After settling in Eumundi and later Noosa, Middenway established several pioneering creative businesses, including Noosa’s first instant print shop, one of its earliest picture framing operations, and a colour processing laboratory supporting the ambitious Noosa Resort Corporation. His photography spanned aerial, commercial and tourism work, capturing early resort development, local characters, and promotional material for tour operators. He later expanded into videography, producing early promotional films for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.
Middenway was also an early adopter of digital technology, building websites, online booking systems and photography courses well ahead of industry trends. Throughout the interview, he offers rich recollections of Noosa’s vibrant characters, informal business culture, and rapid commercialisation—contrasting the relaxed, close knit community he first encountered with the busier, brand driven destination it later became.
