Tony Wellington Oral History
DETAILS
OverviewTony Wellington served as the Sunshine Coast Councillor for Division 12 from 2012 to 2014 and as a Noosa Shire Councillor from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, Tony was elected Noosa Shire Mayor and served until 2020.
In this oral history interview, Tony Wellington recounts his personal background, creative career, community involvement, and central role in Noosa’s de amalgamation and environmental governance. Born in Sydney and later educated in Brisbane and Sydney, Wellington worked for two decades in the film industry before shifting to painting, photography, authorship, and documentary production. He and his family moved to Noosa in 2001, drawn by its environment, lifestyle, and creative opportunities.
Wellington became deeply engaged in community organisations including P&Cs, Landcare, and the Noosa Parks Association. His political advocacy intensified during the 2007 forced council amalgamations, leading to his involvement with Friends of Noosa, the Noosa Biosphere Association, and the Noosa Independence Alliance. Elected to the Sunshine Coast Council in 2012, he publicly championed Noosa’s de amalgamation, ultimately becoming a foundation councillor of the re established Noosa Council. In 2016 he was elected Mayor.
During his mayoralty, Wellington prioritised environmental protection, climate action, sustainable tourism, and river health. He championed a zero emissions target, climate emergency declaration, and initiatives such as oyster reef restoration in the Noosa River. He also led responses to major bushfire events in 2019. Wellington concludes with reflections on ongoing challenges, including development pressures, tourism intensity, and climate driven environmental risks.
