Also Known AsRichard Roy JarmanAdditional InformationRichard Roy Jarman, known as Roy, was born to George Richard Jarman and Fanny Bertha (Gates) at Tamworth in 1891. The family were early settlers at Cooroy where George and Roy Jarman worked as carpenters.
Roy enlisted for service in World War I in August 1915, aged 24 years. He served in Egypt and France and was wounded several times. He returned to Australia in 1919.
On returning to Cooroy, Roy and his brother Harold purchased Shelwell’s Hairdressing and Newsagency and began trading as Jarman Bros. Their brother Sydney later joined the business.
Roy married Bertha Caroline Krohn in 1921. They had six children. Roy was a keen fisherman and member of the Cooroy Amateur Fishing Association, noted for catching large stingrays. He was also instrumental in organising billiards and snooker competitions and sessions in Cooroy, including a ladies afternoon session, which was very popular.
By the mid-1930s, Roy and Bertha were living in Finch Hatton in the Pioneer Valley, west of Mackay, where Roy worked as a hairdresser. Bertha passed away in 1975, aged 81 years and Roy in 1900, aged 98 years.
