The original negative is suffering from Vinegar Syndrome. We’ve chosen to display the image despite its condition as the content is interesting or informative.
The acetate film used in photography is prone to a form of chemical deterioration that causes the acetate base to shrink and become brittle and to separate from the gelatin emulsion layer causing buckling or cracks to appear in the negative. The side effect of this process is the production of acetic acid (vinegar) and a vinegar odour is the first sign that film is deteriorating. The process can be slowed but not halted or reversed. Digitisation is the key way to preserve the image.
