DETAILS
Alternative NameCooroy Pet ShopBloomhill Caner Help Op-ShopDescription
Ferguson’s Auction Mart (former) began its life as the call room of the Gympie Stock Exchange in 1902 and was relocated to Cooroy in 1923. The Gympie Stock Exchange occupied 236 Mary Street, Gympie until the building and site were sold in 1923. The Gympie Stock Exchange committee had made alterations to the site in 1902, including the addition of a separate timber building at the rear of the Stock Exchange building (extant) and accessed by a laneway. When the Gympie Stock Exchange closed in the early 1920s, the timber call room building was removed and divided into two sections. One of these two portions was relocated to a site north-west of the Cooroy railway station by auctioneer and real estate agent, W.Ferguson.
Contemporary reports indicated the diversity of Ferguson’s business interests which included the conduct of cattle sales as well as fortnightly pig auctions at the railways station. He also held the local agency for many lines of farming machinery as well as operating as an agent for the disposal of the subdivision in Tewantin known as the ‘Goodchap Estate’.
William Ferguson contributed to the economic growth of the Noosa region through both his commercial interests and his civic service as Chairman of the Noosa Shire from 1921 to 1927, and again in 1939 to 1946. Alan Ferguson continued this legacy as Ferguson’s Auctioneers continued as a family operation under the ownership of son, Allan William Ferguson, for approximately a further 50 years.
Alan served briefly as a councillor for Noosa Shire and was well known locally for his involvement in many community, church and sporting groups.
Further information on the Gympie Stock Exchange Offices and Club is available through the Queensland Heritage Register: Reference ID 602772.
