Noosa Agricultural, Horticultural & Industrial Showgrounds and Pavilion
DETAILS
Alternative NameNoosa ShowgroundsPomona ShowgroundsDescription
The Noosa Agricultural, Pastoral, Horticultural and Industrial Society was formed in 1909, with the Honourable Andrew Fisher MP as patron of the Society. In 1910, the Society held its first show in the showgrounds at Pomona. A pavilion, cattle yards, ring, poultry pens and other improvements totalling about £900 were noted as being present on the site at the time. The grounds at Pomona are currently owned by the Noosa Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society, also known as the Noosa Country Show Society or simply The Noosa Show Society. The current buildings within the grounds include the Show Pavilion and buildings used for various show uses and exhibits.
The first show attracted thousands of visitors each day from throughout the Shire and outside the shire; a special train was run from Gympie which was filled with people having to complete the journey to Pomona standing.
In 1954, the showground pavilion was destroyed by fire, despite the prompt efforts of the Noosa Fire Brigade who were only able to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring buildings. Although the loss was estimated at well of £1000, the society’s insurance policy enabled the construction of a new pavilion the following year. At the Noosa A.H &| Society’s AGM in April 1955, the committee announced the purchase of a building at Somerset Dam to replace the structure destroyed by fire.Address12,Exhibition Street,Pomona
