ABOUT THIS ITEM
Additional Information
The WOOD - KING family connections and their links to Pomona go back to the early 1900s and lasted for a century. We know that Henry Charles Wood selected land at Federal in 1908 and that his 2 brothers Harold Vickers and George Fred Wood also owned land in the Parish of Gutchy, Cooroy and Tuchekoi. Mrs Mary Watson who had arrived from the district of Federal in NSW also became a selector taking a lease on her selection in the Parish of Tuchekoi in 1906. In 1911, Harold Vickers Wood was to marry Mary Watson’s daughter, Mary Jane.
Harold and Mary Jane lived in Pine Street, Pomona for most of their married lives. Harold died in 1957 and Mary in 1974.
Alfred Charles King was transferred as manager of the ES&A bank, Pomona in 1925. He purchased land from Henry Charles Wood in 1935. His daughter Esther Gwyder King went to Pomona State School where she met Harold Donald Wood, son of Mary Jane and Harold Vickers Wood. Despite the disruption of the King family moving to Toowoomba in 1939, and of WW11 seeing both of them enlist for service, their relationship grew and they married in 1944.
Harold Donald and Esther Gwyder Wood lived all their married lives in Pomona, also in Pine Street. Harold died in 1972 while Gwyder lived in her Pomona family home until she moved in 2008 to a retirement village in Noosaville where she died in 2010.
Harold Vickers and his son Harold Donald were both Tax Agents and practised from the building built by Harold V in 1922 and which now houses professional offices.
The family connection between the Wood and King families lasted many years and were inextricably linked to the Pomona, Federal, Skyring Creek areas.
