1946 – Club Founded
On 12 February 1946, the inaugural meeting of the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club was held. Founding members chose the club name, colours, and pennant, and moved to purchase land and build a shed. The first official boat was Merv Bunney’s, and the club affiliated with the Trainee Association of Queensland later that year.

1951–1955 – Rebuilding and First Rescue Boat
After a brief hiatus, the club resumed in 1951. A constitution was adopted, and a boat shed was completed. In 1955, the club launched its first rescue boat, the “L.C.S.C. Rescue Launch,” though it proved problematic and was sold in 1958.[1]

1960–1968 – Clubhouse and Flood
Construction of the current clubhouse began in 1960. The original shed was sold and removed in 1961. The Ladies Committee was formed that year, raising funds and supporting club activities. A major flood in January 1968 inundated the clubhouse, prompting further improvements.

1970s – Expansion and First National Title
The 1970s saw major developments: a new aluminium rescue boat (“The Doc”), a new constitution, and the club’s first National Title event. The Poop Deck, canteen, and bar were added. Social events like the Annual Dinner and Santa Alf’s Christmas visits became traditions.

1980s – Training and Technology
The club became an official training centre in 1981, launching junior sailing schools. New rescue boats “Doc,” “Kabi,” and later “Norton” were added. Technology like hand-bearing compasses and computerised race results improved operations. The club became incorporated in 1983.

1990s – Modernisation and Resilience
Following a major flood in 1992, the canteen was upgraded and registered as a café. The bar was relocated and modernised. Despite minimal government support, the club remained financially strong, owning its property and maintaining its welcoming, grassroots spirit.

The club is currently documenting its history from the 1900s to the present day, in preparation for the 80th anniversary event to be held in February 2026.
