Synopsis by artist
Bewteen 1869 and 1892 an area of 5678 acres, Portion 1 of Noosa, was depleted of much of its timber. Today Mill Point is a place defined not by physical remains but by its lumen naturae.
Scraggy melaleucas edge the lake like keepers of a dark secret, silent observers of a recent past. The cemetery located 2km west of the main mill settlement, is delineated by long grass and bloodwood trees. It retains a sense of sanctuary and rest.
43 European burials are recorded here, 30 of these being children. The nature and age of their deaths reflect the physical isolation of this early settlement.
Symbols of loss and renewal, the children remain present in the overwhelming beauty of the landscape. The viewer is taken ona journey with the landscape as protagonist.
The film, Children of the Cemetery, is both a visual and spiritual journey along the edges of time and place.
