Elizabeth Winnett
DETAILS
Additional Information
In 1882, Mrs Elizabeth Winnett emigrated from Dublin, Ireland to Brisbane on a four month voyage with her husband and family. Soon after landing in Brisbane, her husband, William Winnett took up a position working in a sawmill at the Mill Point settlement. Elizabeth was a qualified teacher and was appointed to the Mill Point School, serving from 1883-1891. She was highly regarded by the parents and school students, being presented with a decorative certificate and marble clock when the school closed in 1891 as numbers of enrolled students declined in tandem with the closure of the sawmill.
The certificate and clock remained with descendants of William and Elizabeth's until the certificate was donated by Robert Winnett to the Tewantin Heritage & Historical Society and Noosa Libraries in 2025. As a result of this donation, the certificate and Elizabeth's story have been shared with the wider community.
