Also Known AsJ. C. GibneyAdditional InformationJames Crompton Gibney, an 18 year old police cadet, enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in May 1942. He initially served as Air Crew and later as an Air Gunner. He embarked for overseas service in March 1943.
On 6 September 1943, Sgt Gibney’s four-engined Halifax aircraft was shot down by a night fighter during large scale attack on Mannheim and crashed near Lindenberg, Germany at 1.30am. His remains were initially buried in Lindenberg Cemetery along with two other members of crew. The remains were later exhumed, identified and reburied in Rheinberg British Military Cemetery, Germany. A fourth crewman was buried at nearby Frankeneck Cemetery. Four other crewman jumped from the plane and were taken prisoner of war.
His father, James Gibney, was the proprietor of popular boarding house Laguna House in Noosa Heads.
Gibney's name appears on the Tewantin War Memorial.
