Tewantin State School
DETAILS
Additional Information
Tewantin Provisional School No. 181 opened on 2 August 1875 at the school reserve site on Doonella Street. Within a short period of time, the building was considered inadequate both in physical condition and in the size required for the number of pupils expecting to enrol. During this period, the school was periodically closed for enrolments based on the availability of teaching staff. By 1884, a public meeting was called to elect a building committee to organise the construction of a new school building that would be deemed suitable for a State School.
Two years later and with funding established, the committee was able to call for tenders to erect a new school building on the Department of Public Instruction’s preferred site at the corner of Werin and Gooloi Streets (Poinciana Avenue). Tewantin State School opened on 25 April 1887 at a cost of £685. School Principal, William Hooper, was responsible for the establishment of a Forestry Project Club in the 1930s. Between 1937-1938, hundreds of pine trees (Pinus taeda and Pinus elliotti) were planted in the school grounds.
Tewantin State School will celebrate its sesquicentenary on 1 August 2025.
