Bob Ansett Oral History
DETAILS
Overview
Bob Ansett, born in Hamilton, Victoria in 1933, reflects on a life shaped by entrepreneurship, international experience, and deep community engagement. After spending his early childhood in Australia, he moved to the United States during World War II, completing his schooling and serving in the U.S. Army, where he became a paratrooper and later played football for the military. Post service, he studied business and worked in marketing before returning to Australia in the early 1960s.
Recognising an opportunity in the underdeveloped domestic car rental market, Ansett founded Budget Rent A Car Australia. Over 25 years, he expanded the business from a single Melbourne office into a global operation, establishing branches across the Asia Pacific, Japan and the United Kingdom while also leading major organisations including the North Melbourne Football Club and the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. He successfully challenged airport access monopolies, transforming competition in the industry.
Ansett first visited Noosa in the late 1970s and later chose Sunshine Beach as his home, appreciating its natural environment and relaxed lifestyle. After leaving Budget in 1989, he relocated permanently in 2002, becoming a central figure in the community. He played a leading role in resisting forced council amalgamation and spearheading Noosa’s successful 2013 de amalgamation, helping preserve the region’s distinct environmental and cultural character.
