Lynnette Cameron Oral History
DETAILS
Alternative NameLynnette McBirnie CameronOverview
Lynnette (Lynne) McBirnie Cameron offers a rich, personal account of her family’s deep multi generational connection to Tewantin, Noosaville and the Noosa River. Born in 1940, she spent her childhood holidays with her grandparents at the Tewantin State School residence, where her grandfather, William Hooper, served as head teacher from 1921 to 1952. These early experiences shaped her enduring sense of Noosa as “home.” Cameron recalls long days spent swimming in Lake Doonella, roaming pine forests, playing in the river, and visiting family who camped at Noosa Woods. She vividly describes a simpler landscape—Hastings Street as a sand track, abundant soldier crabs, unspoilt river views, and early speedboat races.
A central family story involves the 'Jannett', a historic Norman Wright riverboat once owned by her grandfather. Cameron recounts childhood outings aboard the vessel, her later efforts to trace its fate, and the cherished memories associated with it.
Her narrative also highlights the influential role of her father, educator and regional director William Henry Hooper, whose community leadership and musical initiatives shaped regional schooling. Cameron reflects on her own long teaching career, her family’s strong musical and academic traditions, and her eventual return to Noosa in later life. Throughout, she emphasises the importance of preserving local history, family stories, and the cultural landscape of the Noosa River.
