History of Noosa Libraries
ABOUT THIS ITEM
The Project
Noosa Shire's first public library service was not established until 1973 - it was far from the first in Queensland, but nor was it the last.
It was not established proactively by Noosa Council but in response to significant lobbying and fundraising by a community committee. It was essentially created by the community, for the community and for five decades it has evolved its offerings to meet the needs of the Noosa community.
In 2023, Noosa Libraries celebrated this 50 year milestone. Expressions of interest were sought from Kabi Kabi First Nations artists to be used in collateral materials celebrating the 50th anniversary. Kabi Kabi artist, Alkirah Bell, created the chosen piece titled 'Connections through Water'. The artwork theme of community, connection, learning or storytelling was chosen as these have strong First Nations links that are central to libraries as well.
In addition, oral history recordings were made of some representative staff members and a project commenced to document the history of the Noosa Library Service. The resulting book was published in November 2025.
