Benny Pike Oral History - Olympics
DETAILS
Overview
Benny Pike is a former Olympian who has had a lifelong career in athletics. Benny was born in Noosa and grew up around the Sunshine Coast. He first started boxing in 1971 and won numerous State and National titles and competed in Commonwealth and Olympic Games. He has had a lengthy career in sports commentating and sports promotion and advocacy.
In this oral history interview filmed in 2025, Benny talks about the opportunities that sport, both as an athlete and an advocate, provided for him to travel the world and the surreal experiences this leads to, such as boxing in Madison Square Garden, and meeting a wide range of well-known athletes. He also describes his post-competitive career. He emphasizes the benefits large scale international events have on communities, including the development of venues which have lasting value as community facilities, economic factors, and attracting international athletes to an area to train. He also highlights that many international calibre athletes have their roots in regional and country areas and that every great sports star and athlete was a junior once.
Benny also discusses:
• The first Noosa Triathlon and his work commentating the event for many years.
• The development of the Noosa Aquatic Centre and other sports venues on the Sunshine Coast which were established as part of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games
• The 1980 Olympics and the impact on athletes of the political controversy
• The joy of attending an Olympics and the opening and closing ceremonies
• Importance of welcome home functions for athletes and their families
• Fundraising partnership with Carlton United Breweries
