Additional InformationGarth Prowd was affectionately known as the Godfather of Australian triathlon and was a pioneer of sports tourism in Queensland and a passionate advocate for sports participation. He played a key role in the development of the Noosa Triathlon (Noosa Tri) which he ran through his event management company, USM Events, for more than 30 years. He was also instrumental in establishing the Mooloolaba triathlon, the 2016 Ironman World Championships and the 2017 Velothon Sunshine Coast.
Prowd also ran the Noosa Jazz Festival and was involved in the Noosa Festival of Surfing.
He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 200 and was nominated for Australian of the Year in 2004. He also received a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2005 for his services to Australian sport.
Prowd died in July 2017 following a cycling accident in Spain. He was 65 years old.
Garth Prowd Bridge on Noosa Parade was named for him in response to a request made to Noosa Council following his death.
