Ben Johns Oral History
DETAILS
Overview
Ben Johns provides a detailed account of his life growing up and living at Johns’ Landing on the Noosa River. Johns recounts his family’s long history on the property, beginning with his grandfather’s purchase of the land in 1892 and its evolution into a well-known camping ground. He discusses his childhood spent fishing, farming, and helping with the family’s extensive beekeeping operations, noting the isolation of life between Lakes Cooroibah and Cootharaba and the dependence on boats for transportation.
Johns describes the self-sufficient lifestyle his family maintained, including growing crops, keeping poultry, and harvesting honey. He also reflects on his later career with the PMG/Telecom, his marriage to Pat, and their shared love of old-time dancing. In 1992, after retiring, he officially developed the campground, which had long operated informally due to community demand. He highlights the diverse visitors the property welcomed, from families to travellers, and the strong word-of-mouth reputation it built.
Johns also speaks about environmental changes, local wildlife, and the eventual sale of the property to the Council, who plan to conserve the land and possibly redevelop it for recreation. Throughout the interview, he emphasises the freedom, natural beauty, and lifestyle that made Johns’ Landing a cherished home.
