My link with Tewantin

Iam Lynnette (Lynne) McBirnie Cameron.
The pivot of my story is my Grandfather, William Hooper. Therefore, in telling the
story of my link with Tewwantin, he is the logical place to start.[...]continuing association with the Parkyn family in Tewantin.)

Following a downturn in copper and tin mining[...]liam/Grandad became a trainee teacher and married my
Grandmother, Beatrice Anne Rowe.

My Grandparents, William and Beatrice, came to Tewantin from the school at Reid Creek
where five of their six children had spent their early years. My father, William Henry, was
the eldest child, foll[...]nd Harold. The youngest, Ronald John,
was born in Tewantin where Grandad was the Head Teacher from 1921 to 1[...]1956, followed soon after by Grandma.

And now to my memories of those long ago days.

I'have few memo[...].

Those that I do remember are still very clear. My Mother, brother Peter and I lived with our
grandp[...]while Dad was away. I believed, and now
know that my mother, Elizabeth, taught at the Tewantin school from 1942 to 1944.
[...]school yard near the schoolhouse, sitting behind my older
brother, Peter, as we plodded, certainly no[...]e roof and hit me on the head in the part between my plaits. Istill bear that
scar.

My strongest memories of holidays spent in th[...]
[...]phoned Max Walker and asked him if I could bring my father up to look at the boat; he
agreed. He clai[...]ill in the Walker family, still very much loved.

My husband John and I found it again about three yea[...]soud jetty beside the slipway and Jetty 17. Since my own family has been
living in Tewantin, we have kept a watch on the boat, saddened by th[...]health.

In 1995, I spent several days up here in Tewantin interviewing people whose names were
famil[...]
[...]makes
much more sense and is no less magical than my imagining. We must have spent many
hours on the b[...]orce myself regretfully to tie off and put away.

My memories of the Tewantin township are dim and scattered — the old pictur[...]were plentiful then), and
annoying soldier crabs. My brother Peter had a toy army/navy-type landing ba[...]th tennis courts, very
popular with young people. My parents spent their honeymoon there. As a[...]
[...]e of
boys with the clear intention of overturning my canoe changed their minds and
‘innocently” swam away after meeting my steady, steely, what-would-be-my-future-
teacher-glare. Every year we would have a[...]always fascinated by Hell’s Gates. In his youth my father had been
a lifesaver at Sunshine Beach; in[...]d worms, big long ones. I never could catch them; my brother Ron could and
Dad too, of course. Peter m[...]I’ve always regarded the mouth of the river as my ‘blood country’ to borrow a term used[...]
